EAO 20th annual meeting in Athens a success story

Athens, October 14, 2011 - The European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) is currently holding its 20th annual scientific meeting in Athens. At the congress, the EAO Junior committee has elected a new Chairman, Dr. Theodoros Kapos. Despite announcements of Greek strikes, the EAO congress has been attended by approximately 3000 clinicians and researchers from all over the world.

The overall theme of the 20th EAO congress is treatment planning in implant dentistry. As dental implants are now considered a widely accepted form of treatment, it is crucial that the state-of-the-art solutions they offer meet patients’ expectations. According to Professor Søren Schou, President of the EAO, good treatment planning should enable dental professionals to create appropriate treatment plans for every patient.

At the congress, a world-class faculty of more than 80 speakers and chairs are sharing their scientific and clinical knowledge, providing evidence-based guidelines and practical advice. “The EAO is very pleased with the high-level presentations and scientific work showcased. Yet, we face many more challenges in clinical research. Many speakers’ conclusions are that even more research is needed to be able to generate consensus statements,” state Professor Friedrich Neukam and Professor Asterios Doukoudakis, Chairmen of the Scientific Committee.

“We are very happy to welcome this large number of professionals, many of whom are nationally or internationally renowned scientists and clinicians,” added Professor Neukam and Professor Doukoudakis. The EAO has registered up to 3000 attendees from more than 70 countries around the world. The top countries represented are host country Greece, Switzerland, Italy and Sweden, followed by Japan, the Republic of Korea and China.

EAO Junior Committee elects Dr. Kapos as new Chairman
Harvard-based Dr. Theodoros Kapos has been elected as the new Chairman of the EAO Junior Committee. He is succeeding Dr. Isabella Rocchietta (Italy), who has served the past years as Chairman.

Dr. Kapos is very proud to have been elected as the new Chairman. “I am very much looking forward to my new role in the Junior Committee,” says Dr. Kapos. “Isabella Rocchietta has done a terrific job. I look forward to continuing her initiatives.”

As the new Chairman, Dr. Kapos’ main focus points are promoting the European Association for Osseointegration to young professionals and enhancing the communication between them. “It is important young professionals remain in close contact with each other and share their know-how. Next to that, the Junior Committee and I would like to broaden and strengthen the relationship between young professionals and the EAO by supporting the Board of Directors as much as possible,” states Dr. Kapos.

Dr. Kapos is currently an instructor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences at Harvard University. He teaches in both clinical and didactic courses for undergraduates and postgraduates alike. He previously received his DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Following this, he completed a three-year specialty programme once again, at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he earned an MMSc degree in oral biology and a certificate in prosthodontics. Finally, he completed a two year Advanced Graduate Implantology programme.

Next to his scientific activities, Dr. Kapos maintains his specialist clinical skills in a Harvard private practice. Dr. Kapos’ research interests include variations of head and neck anatomy, applications of CAD-CAM technology in implant dentistry and clinical research related to implant aesthetics.
Dr. Isabella Rocchietta will take up the role of Past Chairman and remain very dedicated to the activities of the EAO Junior Committee.

The Junior Committee consists of top young international clinicians and researchers supporting the activities of the EAO Board. They develop new ideas to improve and grow the association, following EAO’s view to work for the good of patients.
