EAO Congress - Berne 1997
EAO Annual Scientific Congress in Berne/Switzerland April 11/12, 1997
Soft Tissue Interface Implant Esthetics
More than 800 delegates from 32 countries participated at the EAO Scientific Annual Congress ‘97 in Berne/Switzerland. This meeting was organized in close collaboration with the Swiss Society of Oral Implantology and the first such collaboration with EAO and a national implant association. The Organizing Committe under the direction of the EAO President, Dr. Daniel Buser, and Co-Chairman, Prof. Klaus Lang, presented a 2-day program focusing on the topics of Soft Tissue Interface and Implant Esthetics. An outstanding faculty of speakers provided a comprehensive overview on those subjects from both clinical and scientific perspectives. The EAO Research Competition with 6 oral presentations and a poster session encouraged many young researchers to present new research data. The high standard of the entries selected stimulated excellent discussions in the audience. As recipients of the EAO Research Award ‘97 , the Award Committee under the chairmanship of Dr. David Harris chose Dr. H.P. Weber from the Harvard University in Boston for the best oral presentation, and Dr. E. Tadjoedin from the ACTA in Amsterdam for the best poster. On Saturday morning, the EAO conferred its highest award, that of Honorary Membership, to Prof. André Schroeder from the University of Berne for his outstanding scientific contributions in the field of implant dentistry. This is only the second time that this award has been given by the EAO, the first having been received by Prof. P.I. Brånemark. Following a standing ovation by a full auditorium, Prof. Schroeder thanked the EAO for this honor in a short emotional address. At this meeting, Prof. Hubertus Spiekermann was officially inaugurated as the new EAO President. In conjunction with his local organizing committee in Germany, he will provide the scientific program for the forthcoming EAO Annual Scientific Congress ‘98 that will be held in Berlin on May 1 and 2, 1998. In his acceptance speach, Prof. Spiekermann outlined the very exciting proposals for this meeting which will follow the precedent set in Berne, and will be a collaborative venture with the German Society of Implantology (see details of the superb program on the following double page). Our industry partners who supported the EAO as Gold Sponsors provided most excellent precongress courses for the participants. More than 200 participants attended these Gold Sponsor Courses offered by Astra Tech, Friatec, Implant Innovations, Nobel Biocare, and Straumann.
EAO General Assembly
During the meeting of EAO in general assembly, the constitution was presented and unanimously adopted. This is a mile stone for the EAO and is a result of 3 years of hard work by the constitutional subcommittee. Part of the new constitution called for the setting up of the EAO Advisory Council, the chairman of which will be a member of the Executive Board as of right. The assembly elected Dr. David Harris to be the first chairman of the Council.
New EAO Executive Board
At the General Assembly, a new Executive Board was elected according to the new constitution, which consists of the following doctors:
H. Spiekermann, Germany, President K. Gotfredsen, Denmark, President elect D. Buser, Switzerland, Past President W. Bolz, Germany, General Secretary Th. Müller-Hotop, Germany, Treasurer D.
